About Us

Josiah Bartlett Elementary School (JBES) is a small rural public school in the heart of the Mount Washington Valley in Bartlett, NH. Our school opened its doors in 1790 to 15 students with one teacher and we now serve approximately 200 students. Students range from Early Childhood Education and Kindergarten through the Elementary and Middle School grades. Keeping students over the long term helps develop strong relationships and belonging, which promotes a climate for learning. We believe in caring for the whole child, and helping each student develop the Character, Mindset, Thinking Processes, and Communication skills that equip them to be successful community members. We share our facility and partner with Bartlett Public Library, and the Bartlett Recreation Department.

Our differentiators

Why Josiah Bartlett?

Discover a place where learning thrives and futures are built. At SAU#9, we're dedicated to helping every student succeed. Our commitment is to provide an exceptional environment where students not only learn but also grow into their best selves.

  • Empowering Lifelong Learners
JBES believes that every student and every staff member is always learning. At JBES, we engage students with a wide variety of subjects, including outdoor learning, arts and music, STEM, and creative writing, to promote continuous personal and professional growth. These areas of study enrich life by boosting cognitive health, increasing employability, building skills, and fostering a sense of purpose.
  • Fostering Individual Needs
Teachers work to give each student more individualized attention, work in small groups to allow for deeper, collaborative discussions, group projects, and hands-on learning where students can apply critical thinking skills to real-world scenarios. By engaging students' natural curiosity, this approach aims to build confidence and inspire a lifelong love of learning.
  • Building a Strong Community
Community volunteers are an invaluable support for JBES. They help as Academic Mentors, Guest Speakers, and Class Readers. In return, our school helps the community by having food drives, community clean ups, and supporting different community events. We hold themed family nights, BINGO, Family Game Nights, and more. We aim to keep our families informed by sending weekly newsletters, messages from the Principal, monthly Coffee Chats with the Principal and use a variety of communication tools.
